Japanese Ranunculus

This month’s flower is the visually stunning Japanese Ranunculus. A photo simply does not do these flowers justice as you cannot see just how large the heads are. They are huge and it makes them such an amazing and special flower. We used them for a photo shoot this past month and after deliberating what we would like to work them into, we decided that they should be allowed to stand on their own and have nothing take away any attention from their beauty.

Lately the weather has been very gloomy in New York. Although the slight chill in the air is normal for this time of year, I guess since we were so spoiled for that small stretch of time I am wishing for sunny and warmer weather again. Instead of hating on the gloom, I turned to it for inspiration. I love shades of blue that are soothing, tranquil and calming like the turquoises and aqua ones below. Blue is often associated with depth and stability and symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.

Spanish for the “fifth of May”, the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. So celebrate with some of your friends, ice cold margaritas, and delicious Mexican food!

To start off, this weekly roundup will include last week’s as well because last weeks unfortunately did not happen (sorry about that!). Last weekend we had a wedding on a chartered yacht, The Lexington, based out of Skyport Marina for an awesome couple. The weather report did not sound promising but luckily, or thanks to a few crossed fingers on our behalf, the weather held out until later that evening. The bride wanted a “fire” color palette for the flowers and some funky flower selections to be incorporated. We used shades of orange, red, yellow and a touch of purple and for flowers we made sure we had some funky protea, nerine and gloriosa scattered in there.

This week included meeting with a great new couple and going on a site visit to Bayard’s with one of our favorite clients ever. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Adding a Pop of Color

Yesterday we got the chance to meet with a fantastic engaged couple! We love when we get to meet with potential clients because it allows us to get to meet great new people but also to help create and organize a major piece of their wedding vision (the flowers and decor of course!). The future bride had mentioned that she wanted to go with a black and white theme but also have an accent color thrown in because she really loved yellow. Adding a few strategic pops of color is a great way to get to add a bit of personality to your standard black and white color palette and break it up a bit. It works best to choose only one accent color and to use it in a few details however, because you still want the overall theme to read black and white. Here’s a few ways to incorporate color into a black and white event…

1. The Cake: Use a few flowers the same color as your accent color to decorate an otherwise plain black and white cake.

2. The Place Settings: You can play with so many options when it comes to the place settings but our favorites are using a colored napkin or charger.

3. The Invitations: Add in color by using a colored envelope, colored edging, or colored monogram.

4. A Signature Drink: Have a signature drink made to match your accent color. Your guests walking around with them will definitely add a punch of color.
